Directions:

Choosing Your Materials

There are two different types of boas. One is fuzzy and the other has feathers. They are both terrific but have totally different looks. The feathers come in different forms, also. As just indicated, you can buy them in the form of a boa. You can also purchase them individually, in strips or preformed and glued to a fabric backing. When you buy your boas or feathers you need to consider their color, your costume and your vision of the hairpiece you want.

Creating a hairpiece

Boa and Barrette Hairpiece - We are going to start with the boa hairpiece. Before you use the boa, you need to make sure that the main thread of the boa is cut off so that it does not stick out. If you are using the fuzzy boa, just cut the boa a shade longer than the barrette. Then, glue the boa to the barrette. If you use the feather boa, you will probably want to use a slightly larger barrette but otherwise you would precede the same as the fuzzy barrette.

Feather Strip and Barrette Hairpiece - Secondly, we are going to show you how to make a hairpiece using a feather strip. This is really easy. Just glue the feather strip to a hair clip or a barrette. A short feather strip will work very well on a hair clip and a longer strip would need a barrette. Either way, you will want to cover the fabric strip above the feathers by gluing rhinestones on top of the strip.

Feathers Glued to Fabric Backing - Third, we are going to show you how to use feathers that have been preformed and glued to a fabric backing. These are usually very pretty. However, if you cannot find feathers in this form or that are in this form but not the colors and design that you are looking for, it is very easy to create one yourself. Besides choosing the feathers you want to use, you would need to also purchase a piece of fabric for the backing. Although you do not need to choose a stiff fabric since the glue will stiffen it up, you do not want to use a flimsy fabric like organza. Place the feathers in place using E6000 glue. Wait for the glue to dry before you do anything else. Once the piece has dried, glue hair clips to the back of the fabric backed feathers. Depending on the size of the fabric, you will need either one or two clips. Because the fabric will bend slightly, hold the hairclips in place by securing them to the fabric with bobby pins until the glue dries.
